“Oh my God, we have to help him,” Carly said.

“Do we really?” Laura grumbled.

“Yes, we do!”

“You did see him try to drag me out of here, right?”

Sam’s gaze pinballed between the two women. He’d gone into scramble mode when they first arrived inside the gift shop, trying to find something a barricade. The things they’d seen…he couldn’t fully comprehend them, but his survival instincts told him to hide, and hide well. He barely even acknowledged the confrontation between Upton and Laura. But then the poor bastard went outside. Sam tried to stop him…and well, they all saw what happened in the open doorway, then again through the window to the left of the door.

The dinosaur had fled, and Sam didn’t know why, but decided it was likely not for any good reason. And now? Now, he was unsure of how to act. Of course they should help the sheriff. But…but a fucking dinosaur—statue? Animatronic?—had attacked him. And before his brain could get completely locked up by rationalities, he thought, How many more are there?

He began to speak—though in favor of which woman he wasn’t sure—when a new voice from the far back corner of the room stopped him cold. “I wouldn’t go out there if I were you.”

They all turned to the source, but it was Laura who spoke first. “Who the fuck are you?”

The man stood in a doorway Sam hadn’t fully registered before. More than half his face was shrouded in shadow, but signs of advanced age were visible. Sam thought he’d need only one guess: Alan Tippett.

The elderly man held a finger to his lips. He whispered, “Listen.”

They did.

Upton screamed for help again, calling to them, before going silent. The rain was a steady staccato against the terracotta shingles, and Sam couldn’t hear much of anything beyond it besides a fresh roll of thunder that rumbled in his legs. Except—

Except the thunder kept going, getting louder with time, no longer a continuous noise but regular beats.

“Uh oh,” Carly murmured. “That sounds big.”

The stranger nodded. “I recommend staying out of sight and not making a sound.”

Then he took a step backwards, disappearing into the dark. A metal door closed in his place, the snap of a lock resounding much like one of Upton’s gunshots.

“Hey, wait!” Laura shouted. “What the fuck?”

“Shh!” Sam breathed. “Come back here. Hide.”

He ducked behind a table he’d overturned a few minutes earlier in hopes of blocking the gaping hole of the entrance. Carly and Laura came around to him, crouching low.

“What about the sheriff?” Carly whispered.

On cue, Sheriff Upton yelled again in his pained and panting manner. “Jesus Christ, you guys. Fucking help me!”

Carly stood, ever the bleeding heart. Sam grabbed her wrist, began to pull her—

A great, keening roar disrupted their world. The window rattled in protest.

“Oh fuck me! Heeelllpp!”

Sam didn’t need to pull Carly the rest of the way down. She came of her own accord after hearing the terrible roar. The three of them stooped in the ruins of knickknacks and branded apparel.
